At 28, Elena Mason takes a live-in housekeeping job with the Carter family, where Victor Carter accepts her without ever holding her past against her. Just as she begins to hope for a fresh start, a sudden car crash takes Victor's life, and Elena is left convinced the tragedy is her fault. Crushed by guilt, she sinks into despair, and Victor's son Adrian is shattered by the loss as well. Two wounded people then strike an unusual pact to lean on each other and carry on living.
