Number One, Nobody

Episode 26 of 55

Malik Carter grew up poor, practicing on a cracked outdoor court while his single mother juggled three jobs to feed him. Just as an NBA scout quietly marks him as the top pick, a month of sealed pre-draft testing cuts him off from everyone, and his hometown jumps to a cruel conclusion: that he has been arrested for prostitution. His uncle, aunt, and cousin rally the church against him and his mother, robbing them of their dignity and their money, and go so far as to scald her hand as punishment for his supposed lies. The moment the truth comes out, the people who turned on the family rush to beg forgiveness.
