After his father's mysterious death, heir Gabriel Ortega has withdrawn into a distant, joyless existence, reached only by Mary, the young woman who helps run his household. His domineering stepmother Catherina pairs him with the lovely Estelle Castor, hoping a marriage will hand the Ortega fortune to a family she controls. Gabriel refuses to acknowledge Estelle and instead grows closer to Mary, a bond Catherina would never allow. As Estelle's place slips, the scheming escalates and Mary begins suffering cruel treatment from Catherina.
