On the winter solstice, Isabel Whitney marries Felix Sterling, the disabled second son of the Sterling family, in a hurried ceremony. On their wedding night he tells her he intends to die within a year. Isabel decides to treat the arrangement as a casual, playful affair, perhaps even a chance to have a lovely child. As the days go by, though, her warmth begins to reach the shadowed world Felix has closed himself into, and she slowly becomes his light.
