Natalie is pushed into a marriage with Rhett, a rural farmer and widowed single father, by her scheming grandmother and sister. Rhett's young daughter Ellie does not speak, and she and the neighboring woman make it clear that Natalie is not welcome on the farm. As Natalie settles in, she uncovers that the neighbor is abusing Ellie, and a bond begins to form between them. That bond grows stronger when Ellie speaks for the first time to protect her. Just as things start to feel steady, Ellie faces bullying at school and Natalie is drawn into clashes with both her old family and her new one.
