Jane Howard, chairwoman of Howard Group, launches an international design competition as a quiet way to find the daughter she lost fifteen years ago. Alice, a jeweler barely getting by, sends in her childhood ring design without knowing it, using the entry her boyfriend Bruce put forward under his own name. When Bruce is chosen, he humiliates her onstage beside a fake fiancée and paints her as a penniless orphan with nothing to offer. Jane, however, recognizes the design at once, and a DNA result soon arrives that could overturn everything Alice believes about herself.
