An iron-fisted emperor strikes fear into the senate and crushes every rival, but nightly torment has fractured his mind into several deadly versions of himself. Sent to the arena as a lowly palace slave, a young man suddenly discovers he can hear other people's thoughts. Using his wits and a humble tray of fruit, he manages to slip into the emperor's private chamber. Inside, he hears a terrified child crying within the ruler, and he realizes that he alone can reach the crack running through the tyrant's soul.
