In Chicago, Alisa, a former Juilliard-trained pianist, watches her concert dreams collapse when a car accident injures her right hand, so she now busks on the street as a guitarist, playing with only her left hand. Margaret, a retired music teacher, has spent three years grieving her daughter Lily, who died by suicide. Moved by Alisa's music, Margaret leaves her a note, and the two women find common ground in their loss. Together they set out to finish Lily's unfinished piece, Light.
