Three years after the apocalypse, Caleb is seen by everyone as a feeble, cowardly survivor who relies on his younger sister Maya to keep him alive in a cramped shelter. Beneath his weakness, however, lies a dangerous mutation inherited from his parents, a force that could turn him into a monster and erase his humanity if it ever slips out of control. Maya, the shelter's guard captain, shields him at great personal cost, going hungry and taking injuries so he never has to use it. The shelter is not as safe as it appears, since its manager Vance has secretly struck a deal with the slave army Blood Tribute and a biotech firm to sell everyone out.
