In the 1980s, widowed Donna Lee is left raising three small children alone after her husband dies in a car crash, and she moves back to her parents' village. Her family pushes her into a marriage with the town's hard-drinking old bachelor to secure a bride price. He treats her cruelly and sees her children as a burden, and while she is away he sells them to traffickers. Donna spends eighteen years enduring his abuse while she scavenges and sweeps streets to get by, posting flyers everywhere in her search for them.
