A handsome young Chinese scholar takes a bride who has been raised in a strict, traditional household and has never known intimacy. Though he has settled into a respectable marriage, he is restless and daydreams about stepping out into the world to explore experiences he has never had. His longing for something beyond the quiet life he has been given sets up a romance in which desire and duty pull against each other.
