In the frozen North, Skulrun is secretly raised as a boy by her mother Astrid, who believes she is the warrior foretold to unite the clans under Odin's favor. When her true identity is exposed, Chieftain Harald brands his daughter a fraud and orders both mother and child put to death so that his unborn son by the maid Ingrid can inherit the throne. Forced to flee across a frozen lake, Skulrun must survive a battle that takes her mother's life and leaves her wounded and presumed dead.
