A planned assault razes Valdirejo village and the Virangala lands when a giant eagle swoops through gusting winds, its deadly wingbeats spreading chaos. General Batara sends his soldiers to drive it off, and a hail of arrows finally wounds the beast. Amid the panic, village youth Erlangga sees the hurt bird flying wildly and follows it into the forest out of pity, treating its wound with sandalwood powder. Batara soon suspects the boy may be of royal blood, while Erlangga learns that Kemala, the cloth merchant who raised him, is not his birth mother.
