My Savage Farmer Step-Dad

Before her father shipped out to the army, he left one clear wish: should he not come back, her mother was to marry the older farmer who lived next door. The narrator is the daughter who has to live with that arrangement, and the household is about to be shaken by a new stepfather who is rough around the edges and not what she expected. Her mother's future and the girl's place in the family both hang on how she learns to see this stranger.
