He Betrayed My Heart, I Won the World

Sandra Gould finishes her education thanks to the generosity of the Klein family, and to repay them she gives up her hope of studying at an elite university. She remains at home to care for Joe Klein, even as he keeps choosing Vivian Shelby over her again and again. Joe takes it for granted that Sandra will never walk away, unaware of a private arrangement she has struck with his mother. The story follows how her patience with him slowly runs out as his chances are used up.
